Set up ToteRack in five steps
A one-time setup that takes about an afternoon for a full garage — and after that, you never dig through totes again.
- 1
Add your home and rooms
Open the Locations page and add the rooms where your totes live — Garage, Attic, Hall closet. If your things are in more than one house, add each one; you can mark one as your primary home.
- 2
Build a rack that matches your shelf
On the Racks page, add a rack and set its totes across, shelves, and how high the totes stack to match the real shelf. Every spot gets its own bin number, one tote per bin — set it up just like it looks in the room.
- 3
Put totes on it and fill them
Tap an empty bin to add a tote right there — it remembers the spot for you. Then add what's inside each tote. A quick photo of an item is often faster than typing a description.
- 4
Label each tote
Every tote gets its own QR code. Print them however you like (three ways below), stick them where you can see them, and you're done — the code never changes, even if you reprint later.
- 5
Scan to see inside
Point the Scan tab at any label and the tote opens instantly — no unstacking. Or type in the search bar on any page to find an item and see exactly which bin it's in.
Three ways to label — all three work
There is nothing proprietary to buy. Use whatever you have:
Plain paper and tape
Print the labels page on any home printer, cut them out, and tape them on with clear packing tape. Free and surprisingly durable.
Sticker sheets or a label printer
Pick your label size on the Print labels screen — common Avery sheets, Dymo and Brother rolls, and custom sizes are all built in.
QR labels you already bought
Have pre-made QR stickers from Amazon? Stick one on each tote, then use Link stickers to walk down the rack scanning them — each scan ties that sticker to its tote.
Once you're set up
Share with your household
Invite family from Account → Household sharing. Everyone sees the same totes, so whoever is standing in the garage can find the thing.
Track what you lend
Lending the ladder to a neighbor? Note who has it and when it's due back, and ToteRack reminds you — the item shows as lent out until it comes home.
Moving mode
When you move, turn on Moving mode from the Account page. Scan each tote as it's packed and again as it arrives, so nothing gets lost in the truck. Finish the move any time — only packing progress is cleared.
